The first step is to find out if you are qualified for LASIK surgery. Most everyone does make the grade if they are over the age of 18 (age 21 for CustomVue) and have a stable prescription. Medical conditions which exclude persons are: collagen vascular, autoimmune or immunodeficiency disease, signs of keratoconus or abnormal corneal topography, patients taking isotretinoin (Accutane®*) or amiodarone hydrochloride (Cordarone®) or are pregnant or nursing. LASIK is not recommended for those with diabetes, a history of Herpes simplex or Herpes zoster keratitis, significant dry eye that is unresponsive to treatment, or severe allergies.
